The Common Pot:
Collaborative Design for
Risograph Printing
As part of Irish Design Week, 17th - 21st November, we are seeking 3 designers/artists to come together for a two day collaborative workshop responding to the themes of The Common Pot project and Irish Design Week “the ties that tie, the links that link”. The aim is to create a series of recipe cards incorporating inspiration from renowned Irish designer Patrick Scott, an influential figure in the development of KDM. The three selected designers/artists will join 3 students from BA Creative Design from ATU Sligo to collaborate under the guidance of the Pulled Studio team to plan, design, and print a fully packaged series of cards using our Risograph printer.
The six designers will interpret one-pot recipes collected as part of a separate open call from the public and must be pursuing a practice in graphic design, illustration, visual art or similar.
This two day intensive group workshop is a deep dive into risograph printing.
Participants of all skill levels will collaboratively make a set of linked prints using the Risograph printing machine. Risograph, sometimes referred to as digital screen-printing, is known for its characteristic vivid colors and textural imperfections that digital printing cannot achieve. In the workshop, you will learn how the machine works and how to layer colours to create a set of 2 colour prints.
Working collaboratively as a group, you will create an individual design from a brief that must also consider and combine with the other work created.
The workshop will cover:
An overview of the machine & technique
An in-depth look at how the Riso works, incl the parts, supplies and operation of the machine
Advanced file preparation for multi-color printing
Best practices for setting up files and printing
On-press printing practices to ensure reliable high-quality output
Techniques for maximizing the effect of 2 colors through opacities, overlay, & knockout
How to troubleshoot common printing issues, as well as any problems with files.
The workshop will take place in the Pulled Studio in ATU Sligo Innovation Centre on Tuesday 19th & Wednesday 20th November and each participant must be available to attend both these days, additionally it would be valuable to attend the associated events happening as part of the programme.
There is a stipend of €100 for each participant. Each participant should bring their own laptop.
